Playing tunes on random can lead to dire results.

It’s been another busy week – everyone is trying to wrap everything up before December. I’ve got a couple of invites, websites, a few stationery pieces and more – it is feeling so very good. I give 5 stars to busy-ness.

 SofiasEspressoBar

South Melbourne Markets
Not a crowded affair (I’m thinking Suzuki Night Markets here). A lot of stalls happening + dumplings, dim sims, paella, mezze platters and more. As pictured on the left, V & I shared a mezze platter from Sofia’s Espresso Bar, which was truly delicious. There was also live music and dancing – towards the end of the night when the wanderers were heading home, the band raised the bar and made me stay.

RMIT – Make the Cut
I went to the Guildford Lane Gallery on Saturday – and saw some mighty fine talent. I’ve captured my favourites. Clockwise from top left; Kate Steele – the textures in her couch, Louisa Kwan – fantastic concept – the coil seat called loopie, Meagan Oglesby – close up of her seat called Trellis, Tilly Charles – saving the water from the colander for later use, Jumlie Lie – the perfect slouch space.

 Alabakov1

Alabakov presenting at the Creative Women’s Circle. Also at the Guildford Lane Gallery, was Stephanie Carello, designer, pattern maker, fabric sourcer, PR manager and everything else for Alabakov. At 24, she produces a collection available only for a month – order online and the garment is delivered to you in 3* weeks. Stephanie is energetic, inspiring and down to earth – can I just say, I have a special spot for her because she wore stunning nail polish and gorgeous shoes.
*ish – sorry I should have taken notes.

 Outre

Outré
I love popping into Outré. Bang in the middle of the city (somewhat) and fantastic pieces. I want to buy buy buy. Currently exhibiting is Pagan Pleasures, a Tiki selection – as well as ceramics. Super cool. Which also reminds me, I have been to what I think maybe the only Tiki Bar in Melbourne – it’s in Richmond – interiors are epic – but I think it’s the drinks that win you over – volcanoes that you have to share between 4! Must thank Meeks for introducing me to Tiki love.

 TedX

TEDx Melbourne
I hope you have heard about TED. I like to spend my lunch hours watching videos from TED. It’s about “Ideas Worth Spreading”. Conversations by some of the best in their fields – they are inspiring, challenging and push the borders of (what used to be) my constrained mind. On Saturday, I attended TEDx Melbourne. I was really hopping in + out due to a crazy weekend schedule, but I got a chance to hear Greg Smith & David Logan. Zen Sugiarto has written a fantastic overview in detail – click here for more. My take – “a key component is to reuse more than we recycle.” They also gave lollies and I have appreciatively stolen photography from Pete Yandell.

 CornwellForensic

And lastly, spotted on the ground floor of Melbourne Central, I saw this advert for the new release of Patricia Cornwell’s novel – The Scarpetta Factor. I appreciate the 3D-ness of it and making the book a part a bigger story. Wondering what the budget was and how many other boards they’ve put up? How many of us notice this form of advertising because it’s a step away from the norm? How many of us recognise it as advertising and walk past? I guess I should also tell you that I have never read any of her books (I get scared very easily, and it’s just best I avoid such terror).

Looking to read more on design? Here’s an epic article on the New York Public Library rebranding.

That’s it from me for this week! I might head of to the park and soak some of those rays – Doc. says I need more vitamin D.

I know it’s getting a bit repetitive now, but I LOVE YOUR BLOG. This week you managed to get to all the events that I’d marked in my diary but couldn’t attend, so it’s great to read what you spotted and see your wonderful photos. btw I’m a big fan of Guildford Lane Gallery too!

You won’t believe it. I read your blog and thought “argh – does she have to get to everything I can’t seem to make it to?!!!” – now I feel better :) I can’t believe I missed Beautiful Losers….. That gallery is awesome – they really make an interactive effort to include the up & coming. Kudos !
