Jalan Jalan Java – Part 5, Qunci Villas.

Lombok is the hidden tourist side of Indonesia – especially as opposed to Bali. It’s got the beaches, the hotels and the scene – but much quieter and on a smaller scale and just as beautiful.

Warning – I don’t think I’ll do Lombok much justice. It’s more about Qunci Villas. The better the stay – the less you get out. This was our best.
Can I just say – for the first time in my life, I had a plunge pool with my villa. It’s my new high. I also have to admit, I didn’t swim in it. But sat right next to it all day and read and read and read.

Highly rated by the Lonely Planet, Qunci Villas is a designers dream. With art on the walls, statues in gardens, an outdoor shower with shampoo and conditioner in custom made Qunci bottles and the most gorgeous wooden furniture – I was swooning. They also offer scooters for hire so you can ride all over Lombok. Very exciting and terribly nerve wrecking.

The paintings at Qunci Villas are by an artist – Symon who is based in Bali. They literally do “breathe life” into the rooms. They are arresting and beautiful. More on Symon when we reach Bali.

We visited Galeri Nao – which is where all the wooden lusciousness is conceptualised and created. Rahman was super sweet, he took us around his work space, showed us his collection of old, old wood and antique works. His work has been featured in (I will insert the name of famous design magazine in here very, very soon). Everything feels so organic and tangible, I wasn’t surprised I got he doesn’t have a website… Sorry – you may just have to visit Lombok after all.

The ultimate memory I have of the Indonesia trip is swimming in an infinity pool facing the sea at sunset with a million shades of orange settling on my skin and talking to the locals with V. I’ve seen so many sunsets, but nothing quite so overcast and orange at once.
